Android 12: Google announces most promising features at I/O 2021

Android 12 was launched earlier this week at the Google I/O 2021 keynote. The new Android version has a list of customization and vivid color effects. Google also introduced new privacy options on Android 12. In addition to the next-generation Android operating system, Google showcased a new version of Wear OS at the I/O keynote. Like Android 12, the new Wear OS brings new interface-level changes. It also comes with fitness features coming from Fitbit and optimizations available on Samsung’s Tizen.

On this week’s episode of the Gadgets 360 podcast Orbital, host Akhil Arora spoke with review editor Jamshed Avari and senior reviewer Sheldon Pinto to discuss the Android 12 and Wear OS announcements that took place at Google I/O 2021.

Android 12 is offered as customizable and personalized. It comes with a brand new visual style that has been designed to take on the various custom skins that smartphone makers often use on their phones over the stock Android experience. The enhancement of the interface on the new Android versions is intended to encourage manufacturers to go with the vanilla treatment over their proprietary offerings. It also gives users reason to look for a smartphone that has a completely stock interface – like a new Pixel phone, perhaps.

Google also showcased new privacy features coming to Android 12 – some of which look similar to those of Apple’s on iOS 14 from the past few months.

Like Android 12, Wear OS is getting a facelift this year, with a new tap to switch between third-party tiles and apps gesture support. Samsung is also working with Google this time around, introducing Tizen’s power efficiency and other features into the new Wear OS version. Fitbit’s fitness-focused functions are also coming as an integrated package within the new wearables operating system.

In the second part of this week’s Orbital episode, Akhil talks with zombie nerds Ali Pardiwala and Shayk Mazumdar to talk about Zack Snyder’s new zombie heist thriller – Army of the Dead. The film is available to watch on Netflix and stars Dave Bautista and Ella Purnell in the lead roles.

Army of the Dead (which lasts about two and a half hours) was announced in 2007, but work only began in 2019. The film’s plot is set in Las Vegas, although it operates like a video game mission. Set in a post-apocalyptic western wasteland.
