A man has been taken into custody after vandalizing the Washington Monument late Tuesday, police said, adding that the area around the base of the monument has been temporarily closed.
The United States Park Police (USPP) said on Twitter, “The area around the base of the Washington Monument is temporarily closed. USPP holds adult male detention for vandalism. NPS (National Park Service) patrons will work on the restoration process “

Images posted on Twitter by local media showed the west side of the base of the monument being painted red.
The 550-foot-tall monument is a popular tourist attraction and is located on the National Mall between the Lincoln Memorial and the Capitol in Washington DC.
