Australia:

Dutch cyclist Mathieu van der Poel was arrested after a late-night brawl with noisy neighbors on the eve of Sunday’s elite road race at the World Championships, a report said.

Rainbow, 27, was one of the favorites for Jersey and started the 266.9-kilometre (165.4 mi) slog around the coastal town of Wollongong, south of Sydney, on Sunday, but retired in the early stages.

Belgian broadcaster Sporza said she spoke to him before the start and he told them: “It’s true, yes.”

“There was a small brawl. It was about the noisy neighbors and they are quite strict here. I didn’t come back to my room till four o’clock (in the morning). It’s definitely not ideal. It’s a disaster.” But I can’t change anything now. I’m trying to make the best of it.”

New South Wales State Police confirmed that an altercation took place at a Sydney hotel and that a 27-year-old man was charged with general assault, but would not name those involved.

In a statement to AFP, police said: “A man was in the hotel (Saturday) around 10.40 pm…

“It is further alleged that the man pushed both the juveniles, in which one fell on the ground and the other was pushed into the wall, causing minor injury to his elbow,” the police said.

The hotel management called the police and they “arrested a 27-year-old man shortly after”.

“He was taken to the Kogra police station (in Sydney) and charged with two counts of general assault.”

The man was granted bail to appear in a local court in Sydney on Tuesday.

Van der Poel has enjoyed a spirited season with victories at the Dwars dor Vlaanderen and the Tour of Flanders, third in Milan-San Remo, fourth in the Amstel Gold Race and ninth in Paris-Roubaix.
