Reports of mistreatment of female guards by inmates at Gilboa Prison have been circulating in the Israeli media for many years.
But the prison’s management came under renewed scrutiny in September last year, when six Palestinian prisoners escaped from their cells via a drainage system from Gilboa, an escape that captured global headlines.
Over the past year there have been several revelations about what some Israeli media call the “pumping affair”, in reference to widespread reports that male supervisors ordered female guards into situations where they were attacked by prisoners. were weak.
But last week a woman who identified herself as Gilboa’s former guard, who remained anonymous, posted testimony online saying she had been repeatedly raped by a Palestinian prisoner.
She said that she was “handed over” to him by her superiors and she became his “private sex slave”.
“I didn’t want me to be raped, violated again and again,” she said.
The woman’s lawyer, Karen Barak, confirmed anonymous testimony on Israel’s Channel 12 later over the weekend, saying her client needed mental health support after this ordeal.
Reacting to the developments, Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid told his cabinet on Sunday: “It (cannot) be tolerated that a soldier is raped by a terrorist during his service.”
“It should and will be investigated. We will make sure the soldier gets help,” Lapid said.
In a separate statement on Sunday, Interior Minister Omar Barlev said the “case at Gilboa prison a few years ago” had “shocked the Israeli public.”
“I read the published evidence and I was just shocked,” Barlev said.
Lapid said aspects of the case were under a secret order, but he was in discussions with Israel Prison Service (IPS) commissioner Katy Perry “to ensure that such an incident never happens again.”
Gilboa Prison is in northern Israel, where Israel indicts several Palestinians for their involvement in attacks against Israelis.
