South Korea, US fired 4 missiles in response to North Korea test: report

According to reports, South Korea and the US fired 2 Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) missiles.

Seoul:

South Korea and the United States fired four surface-to-surface missiles into the East Sea, commonly known as the Sea of Japan, Yonhap news agency said on Wednesday, citing South Korea’s military.

South Korea’s military said the launch was in response to a ballistic missile fired by North Korea over Japan on Tuesday for the first time in five years.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said that South Korea and the United States each fired two Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) missiles that hit counterfeit targets.

South Korean President Yoon Suk-yol called the North Korean launch “provocation”, and vowed a “strong response”.

On Tuesday, South Korean and US fighter jets conducted a bombing exercise on a target in the Yellow Sea.

Pyongyang last fired a missile at Japan in 2017, when North Korean leader Kim Jong Un had insults with then-President of the United States, Donald Trump.

UN chief Antonio Guterres denounced North Korea’s latest test as “clearly an escalation”, while US President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida called it “in the strongest terms”.
