Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday urged the United Nations to punish Russia for its aggression, called for a special tribunal and compensation fund, and stripped Moscow of its veto.
“A crime has been committed against Ukraine and we demand appropriate punishment,” said Zelensky, the only leader allowed to deliver a speech via video at the annual summit.
Wearing his trademark military green T-shirt, Zelensky said in a pre-recorded address that Russia violated the world body’s principles.
Zelensky called for the establishment of a special tribunal against Russia “for the crime of aggression against our state” and to ensure accountability.
He demanded a fund to compensate the Ukrainians for the losses incurred during the invasion.
Zelensky also urged the United Nations to remove Russia’s veto power from the Security Council.
Ukraine has previously argued that Moscow has a seat that belongs to the former Soviet Union, not Russia.
