New Delhi (PTI). The Ministry of Information Technology (IT Ministry) has taken a big step to control the increasing fake users on social media. The IT Ministry has said in a proposal that under the new rules, important social media companies will have to verify the active mobile numbers of all users and will also have to prepare a separate database for them. The ministry has said that due to verification reasons, social media companies have to create this database. Sources say that this proposal will help in solving issues like lack of information about the rapidly increasing users on social media. The special thing is that for the first time such a proposal has been presented by amending the existing rules for social media companies.

The draft has also been sent to the Law Ministry
Sources have said that these companies will have to comply with stringent obligations, including traceability of users, under the amended rules. The ministry has sent a draft of the revised rules to the Law Ministry. Sources also said that important social media companies and intermediaries will have to understand the difference between their duty and requirement. Moreover, they have to clearly mention the need and their obligations under the rules. Let us tell you that the draft of rules regarding these proposed amendments was presented in December 2018. Several meetings have been held in the IT Ministry regarding this issue.
